“ScalersTalk口译进阶小组”的前身是“ScalersTalk交传小组”,该小组成立于 2015年 2 月。现阶段,小组专注高级阶段的交替传译与同声传译训练,在巩固语言基本功的同时训练各类口译技能,从而为承担正式场合的口译打下坚实基础。
As a studio, we feel we have an expertise and that expertise is a process, rather than a particular feel of project. And that process we applied to whether something is a power station, a shopping mall or a university building or Christmas cards and we were given the commission to design a new bus for London. And this is our client wearing flairs in the 1970s. He was a bus conductor and a bus driver. He is now the head of transport for London.

特别提醒:做同传时,如果没有听懂讲话人的意思,那么请在出译文时保证语意连贯有意义。因为听众只能借助同传来理解,所以我们必须要考虑听众的感受。

“we were given the commission to design a new bus for London”中的“commission”指的是“任务”;被动结构变的;整句译作“我们接到一个任务,要设计新的伦敦巴士”。
“And this is our client wearing flairs in the 1970s”中的“flairs”没有听出来时,整句可模糊处理成“这是我们的客户,那是20世纪70年代”。
“He was a bus conductor and a bus driver. He is now the head of transport for London”一句出现了三个职位名称,处理方式有两种:
“a bus conductor”、“a bus driver”和“the head of transport for London”,分别译作“售票员”、“司机”、“伦敦交通局的局长”。也就是说,时间充足,反应足够快的情况之下可做此处理;译文请见“参考译文二”。
概括处理。实战同传时往往会出现时间不够,反应慢了一拍的情形,这时使用概括的处理便能节省时间。需要注意的是,概括的译文需与上文保持连贯且准确。译文请见“参考译文一”。
Society had changed. London had changed. And the buses have just been kind of bastardized, kind of bit by bit. And as someone with interest in why things become like they are, you sit in the bus and you can see all the regulations accumulating like barnacles on top of each other. For example, you can see that someone came along and said there is a new code for the contrast level, with hand poles and you can see that someone’s gone contrast level, hand poles, nuclear warning yellow, so the hand poles are coming from nuclear warning yellow. Or someone said that we need a chiller.
社会变了,伦敦变了。巴士一直在变化着。有人对此感兴趣的话,你可以坐在巴士上,会发现所有的规则都在一点点增加。比如说,你会看到有人走过来说,有新的规定是关于区分度的,把手的区分度,还有警示的黄色。把手都成了警示黄色。或者有人说我们需要冷却机。

本段的难点就是遇到生词如何对待的问题。一般而言,遇到生词,我们切忌慌张,需稍微耐心地等一等,然后联系听到的词或句子后将其进行整合,这样才能更好地让听众听到简洁连贯的译文。
But they passed the challenge for us that there was no romantic connection to the project and the bus from 50 years ago, but we had the problem that the bus people were romantic about was going to be 3 meters smaller than the new bus that we needed to design. So the challenge was how to stop London’s little streets that don’t have the scale of building in Hong Kong from having its huge bricks going around the streets and how to minimize the brick factor.
他们给我们带来了挑战。并不存在联系。现在的设计和50年前的巴士没有联系。问题是,人们怀念的巴士会短3米,比新巴士短。挑战是要防止伦敦的窄小的街道不会出现行走的大砖块,要让它不那么像砖块。

be romantic about 沿袭上文出现的“romantic connection”的语义
“the bus people were romantic about was going to be 3 meters smaller than the new bus that we needed to design.”需注意两个地方:
本句出现了比较级,可先陈述情况,然后在后面补译比较的意思;
“the new bus that we needed to design”中的“that we needed to design”可不译。新巴士原本就需要设计,所以语义上可不再重复,语言能更简洁。
整句译为:问题是,人们怀念的巴士会短3米,比新巴士短。
“So the challenge was how to stop London’s little streets that don’t have the scale of building in Hong Kong from having its huge bricks going around the streets and how to minimize the brick factor”
本句出现了问句,处理时先避开疑问词,直接译出内容;
第一个问句里又包含了一个定语从句。可稍微等一等,待整个句子都出来的时候,整合整个句子,规则是保持句子的简洁和连贯。此处如果时间不够,可省译定语从句的内容。
huge bricks 大砖块。此处有一个梗:新巴士是红色的,外形比较大,因而可直译为“大砖块”;整句译法请见“参考译文”。
本周继续第 75 周英译汉训练的主题是设计,本次材料为英国天才设计师 Thomas Heatherwick 关于其作品的演讲的第二部分(视频网址:百度云链接 密码:1lzm)。本次训练涉及他的另外两个作品,其一是伦敦的“性感巴士”,也是本篇演讲里面比较难的部分。小组成员利用该材料练习了交替传译、同声传译和限时视译,并学习原文的词汇、表达和句型句式。汉译英GR43-45段,不做日志整理。本日志整理的是第76周练习的英译汉部分。
