so going to those big numbers, as Jeremy was saying in 2007 we became fifty percent urban. This is going to grow so that by 2050 it will be seventy-five percent urban and probably by the end of this century will be in almost ninety-nine point nine percent urban. This means that every single day 180,000 people arriving somewhere in the world at the door of the city, there are a hundred and eighty thousand people every day who want to become citizens, every single moment there are about 40 million Chinese people moving between the village and the city. So what does this all mean?
“in 2007 we became fifty percent urban. This is going to grow so that by 2050 it will be seventy-five percent urban and probably by the end of this century will be in almost ninety-nine point nine percent urban”此处有三个用数字来表达的城市人口情况:
“in 2007 we became fifty percent urban”表示“2007年有50%的城市人口”;
“This is going to grow so that by 2050 it will be seventy-five percent urban”表示“还会继续增长,到2050年将达到75%”;
“probably by the end of this century will be in almost ninety-nine point nine percent urban”表示“到本世纪末会接近99.9%”;
“This means that every single day 180,000 people arriving somewhere in the world at the door of the city, there are a hundred and eighty thousand people every day who want to become citizens”前后两句的意思相近,可只译其中一句(当然时间足够的前提一下,能够全部处理最好),译作“这就是说每天有18万人进入城市,有18万人每天希望成为市民”。
She lived on 555 Hudson Street in Greenwich Village in Manhattan.
She saw that this interweaving of ordinary lives in an ordinary Street on an ordinary day created something that was more than the sum of its parts, that there was some electricity that occurred here that you couldn't necessarily engineer that it came about naturally through the complexity of an ordinary urban street.
The second is equality, equality is the thing that really, inequality is one of the things that really undermines trust and we're becoming increasingly unequal if you consider that London is now the top 10% is 300 times richer than the bottom ten percent.
“equality is the thing that really, inequality is one of the things that really undermines trust”此处演讲人有个口误,将“inequality”说成了“equality”,于是改口时加重了语气。
“if you consider that London is now the top 10% is 300 times richer than the bottom ten percent”一句有比较级,需要特别注意。
