写在前面的话

“ScalersTalk 口译进阶小组”的前身是“ScalersTalk 交传小组”，成立于 2015 年 2 月，现阶段，小组继续专注高级阶段的交替传译与同声传译训练，在巩固语言基本功的同时训练各类口译技能，从而为承担正式场合的口译打下坚实基础。 96 周起，小组全面引入 CATTI 新版二口教材的训练，时间为每天晚上 8 点到 9 点，训练期间播放录音、记笔记，在空白处按暂停键后做口译，用 QQ 发群语音，然后对照文档，查找漏译和错译的部分，标出口译时较为困难的词汇和表达，随时发到群里；每天早上 6 点到 7 点训练复述。

Very recently, I was invited to the University by Professor Coles to come to speak to the history lab which was a lovely afternoon. And again, I got the most warm welcome here at the university. So this wonderful city where I was born and where I grew up, I still think of as home. And it’s quite simply where my roots are. And just as many of you will be doing today, this very special occasion is a good moment for us all to acknowledge our roots. It’s a chance to thank my parents who are here, who taught me the value of hard work, not least by their own example, as they dedicated their professional lives to the children who are their pupils in Leicester schools.

One of the great honors of this job is simply to listen to people’s stories and then dignify them by telling those stories fairly and well. And one of the most important aspects of this job for those who might be contemplating it and people coming to this job from all sorts of disciplines is not simply to give voice to the supposedly great and the good, but to give the voice to those who otherwise might not be heard. And I learned that lesson here in Leicester.

I also learned my city comprehensively that whatever your background, if you’re canny and prepared to work with initiative, you will get where you want to be, and I know many of you will be contemplating the job market and what might lie ahead in the coming months. Don’t take NO for an answer and always say YES to an opportunity, even if you think you can’t quite live up to it. It helps to me most days of my working life. And take the knocks when they come, because they will, and make something positive out of them.
