if 引导的条件状语从句;fail to do sth没能做到某事,to open 和 to leave 用 and 连接,但并不是并列动作,to leave 与从句前的to come straight 是并列动作,理解和翻译时要注意。
if ever的ever 表示强调,可以翻译成“任何时候”=when ever

Mrs. Richards realized that it must be the man from the Electricity Board who had to come to read the meter.

She tried to explain the situation , saying 'It's only me', but it was too late.
saying...
When Mrs. Richards walked towards him , he fled , slamming the door behind him .
She tried to explain the situation , saying 'It's only me', but it was too late. The man let out a cry and jumped back several paces. When Mrs. Richards walked towards him , he fled , slamming the door behind him .
When Mrs Richards walked towards him, he fled, slamming the door behind him.
